Deferred Annuity Sales Fraud
A lawsuit was brought against SunAmerica Life Insurance Company and AIG Retirement Services (f/k/a AIG SunAmerica), alleging unlawful, unfair and deceptive business practices, false and misleading advertising, and elder abuse. SunAmerica is alleged to have inserted hidden penalties and charges into their deferred annuity products, including the Sterling Select product.
According to the allegations in the lawsuit, SunAmerica had designed their deferred annuity products, including their Sterling Select product, to be drafted so that the average person, let alone an elderly consumer, could not readily understand their terms. The plaintiff alleges that it was through this unfair, deceptive and unlawful scheme that defendants were able to extract hidden penalties and fees from their elderly policyholders.
