Renne Sloan Holtzman Sakai LLP, the Public Law Group, and the Vinick Law Firm, have joined forces with former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown in a civil rights case against 24 Hour Fitness, one of the largest chains of privately-owned fitness centers in the world.
After a two-year investigation, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has found in favor of six 24 Hour Fitness employees, including two high level managers, who alleged that they were retaliated against because of their complaints regarding racist, sexist and homophobic comments. The EEOC found that “evidence also revealed that a class of individuals was retaliated against and subjected to a hostile work environment.”
A legal team, headed by the Renne firm, the Vinick Law Firm, and Mayor Brown, is representing the two managerial employees, who filed charges with the EEOC against 24 Hour Fitness after they were retaliated against for coming forward with complaints of discrimination and harassment in the workplace. Those cases are currently working their way through an EEOC “conciliation” process. If no settlement is reached, the cases will proceed to litigation.
“It’s very clear that 24 Hour Fitness failed to take reasonable steps to prevent discrimination, harassment and retaliation in the workplace,” stated Louise Renne, founding partner of the Renne firm. “But what’s worse, they knew they had a problem. They have a problem, throughout the company. And what did they do? They protected the bad guys, and forced out the good guys. And in doing so, they sought to enforce their code of silence.”
If you have been or currently are employed by 24 Hour Fitness and believe that you were discriminated against because of your race, sex, or sexual orientation, and/or believe that you were retaliated against for complaining about such conduct, please contact Emily Nugent at emily@dicksonlevy.com, or call her at (415) 730-1162. Federal and state law prohibits employers from taking any adverse action against employees who report or complain of unlawful practices in the workplace.
